This is a central place for avalanche and snowpack data pertaining to the local mountain areas around Haines, Alaska. On this site you can read about the current conditions and share your observations. User participation is critical to increasing everyone's awareness of current conditions. So please, SUBMIT YOUR OBSERVATIONS. If you would like to submit an observation in private, please do so via email here.

A snowpack summary on the Current Conditions page will be updated as often as possible. Please note that this snowpack/hazard information is not funded or endorsed by any governmental organization. Use the data on this website at your own discretion as part of a thorough evaluation of the avalanche hazard in the field.

4/14/12
We will not be updating conditions for the rest of the season. This has been an excellent winter in Haines, with a handful of big snowfall records broken and the best skiing in many years. Thanks to all who helped out this year. The HAIC is the collaborative effort of all those who took the time to submit observations, volunteer, and help out, as well as the support and guidance of the AAIC and its members. We look forward to improved operations, more community involvement, and even deeper snow next year!

Details about Tuesday's avalanche that resulted in two fatalities are being gathered by Alaska Heliskiing and will be released to the public soon. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available. In the meantime, watch out for lingering deep slab instability.

We are happy to host a FREE avalanche awareness class, courtessy of NAOI at the Haines Fire Hall: Saturday, 1/21 from 9am-4pm. It will be a great introduction for beginners and an important refresher for others. The course will feature indoor and outdoor activities. Space is limited and pre-registration is required online here.

We are happy to host a FREE community beacon instruction/practice session, courtessy of NAOI at the Haines library: Saturday, 12/17 from 1-4pm. Whether you're a seasoned expert or new to the whole thing, please come practice your beacon skills. Please bring a beacon if you have one and pre-register online here. 1-2pm will feature indoor instruction, with outdoor practice from 2-4pm.

We're busy planning improved operations for this season. The HAIC has teamed up with the Alaska Avalanche Information Center to increase our capabilities and the quality of information we put out. Look for regular snowpack summaries to begin in mid November. Also look for information about local educational opportunites to be posted as they are planned. Think snow.

Two avalanche incident summaries for this season have been added to the Incidents page. One from January, and one from late April. Please read these excellent case studies of local avalanches.

The HAIC will not be updating conditions or information for the rest of the season. Get out and enjoy the spring corn, be safe, and check back in the fall. Thanks to all who supported the HAIC through donations, input, volunteer work, and observations. See you next season!
